Katayoun Hutson

headshot2warmthBased in the Washington, DC area, Katayoun is the author of “Oriental Dance Curriculum, A Complete Guide for the Belly Dance Teacher: Beginner to Multilevel,” which is the first globally-distributed curriculum guide for teaching belly dance. Trained through the University of Virginia Curry School of Education in curriculum, instruction, human development and learning theory, Katayoun merges her classroom experience as a school teacher and her leadership in the belly dance community to bring tried and true teaching methods to the belly dance classroom.

Best known for her interpretations of folkloric dance and the Persian dances of her heritage, in her 15 years of teaching experience, she has had the opportunity to educate diverse audiences about the beauty and benefits of Middle Eastern dance. She has taught in a wide range of venues including: health clubs, senior centers, schools, and community centers, adapting her class format to each audience, accumulating over 8,000 instructional hours in the classroom and the dance studio.

Before becoming a studio owner, she had a successful full-time career as an elementary school French teacher at a prestigious private school while maintaining a lively schedule of dance training, teaching and performing. Through her classes and teacher-training program, she aims to bring out the best in her students, while taking into consideration their individual needs and interests.

An entrepreneur and community leader, she has served on the boards of WAMEDA (Washington-Area Mid-East Dance Association) as an officer, and co-founder of Tiraz Dance Network. Currently, she serves as CEO and Artistic Director of Mosaique Center for Cultural Arts in Sterling, Virginia, an organization she founded in 2009, where she teaches 10-14 classes per week to adults and kids of all ages, abilities and backgrounds.

Extensively trained in folkloric, Oriental and Iranian dance and music, her expressive performance style has been described as “elegant and earthy,” “powerful yet subtle,” with “perfect musicality and interpretation.” She performs as a soloist and with her dance company Troupe Eshveh, which specialize in folkloric dance with a modern twist.

Katayoun will share here expertise in teaching, offering topics ranging from multilevel classes and class formats to curriculum and lesson planning. She will also share here knowledge and perspective of entrepreneurship as well as self-publishing.
